Nature is Awesome

The phrase “go touch grass” is often said bluntly and antagonistically near the close of unhealthy arguments, but it may be good advice. Studies are showing measurable benefits to spending time outside and appreciating the world around us ranging from mental, physical, to social health.

Go Touch Grass

Personally, I enjoy spending time hiking and taking landscape shots on my phone and, scientific data aside, spending time in the great outdoors and contemplating it’s beauty gives us time to appreciate the world around us. So the next time you’re feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, a viable response is indeed to “go touch grass.”

Benefits of Touching Grass

Mental Health

Studies have shown that spending time in nature increases focus and reduces both stress and anxiety.

Physical Health

Time spent “touching grass” can improve heart health, immune system, help regulate sleep, all in addition to provide opportunities for exercise.

Inexpensive

Spending time in nature doesn’t need to be expensive. From gardening to walking receive the benefits of spending time outdoors.

Emotional Health

Spending time outside can improve mood and help combat depression.

Do I have to spend all my time outside?

Nope!

Spending as little as 5-10 minutes outside can improve mood with measurable physical benefits occurring with ~2 hours a week.

In fact, after 5 hours any additional measurable benefits due to the extended time outside are marginal and unnecessary. (Unless you like being outside because nature is awesome)
